A Message from Mr. Besson

2007-11-28

Hello Andy, Jerome,

I’ll avail myself of the opportunity allowed me by Andy’s mail below to introduce myself briefly. I translated the French version of Dr. Jerome Keating’s articles that Dr. Liao has agreed to host on Taiwan 1st. Please forward my thanks to Dr. Liao.

As the addresses at the bottom of your forwarded mail below will tell you, I am registered with Bireiisland on Yahoo Japan . Actually, I think I originally registered with Houzan Takao 1946, who channels messages from nichibeiseikatsujiji, who provides another E-Magazine on Yahoo Japan .

The following is a list of the person whose communications I have been privy to through the channels above: Cheng-Kuang Chen (陳辰光) ; Andrew Chang ; Richard Hartzell ; Roger Lin ; Eric Chan ; Paul Hsieh ; Dr. Phil Chen ; Huiying Huang (黃惠瑛); Nachi Takao.

I am registered with Yahoo Japan. But a quirk of Yahoo Japan Groups registration process prevents me from accessing their groups. A regrettable situation as it may be, I won’t whine about it, being that, although Japanese is my main language of work, typing a response to a message can still prove a daunting task.

Why would a westerner register with a Taiwan matters-related site geared at a Japanese readership?

My connection with Taiwan goes back thirty years today. I spent half of the intervening hiatus in Japan . While in Taipei , I became aware that speaking Japanese was required for an insight into what Taiwan thought deep down. Because only those Japanese educated generations could be depended upon for a reliable tale of Taiwan ’s woes from the mid-1940’s onward.

I registered because I had a hunch that the spirit behind Taiwan-centric consciousness expressed itself best in Japanese. That was my motivation when I registered. The insight it allowed me proved me right.

A meeting in the flesh with Dr. Keating a few weeks ago in Paris led to my contributing my translations to your endeavors. As a fact, I am delighted that my translations could buy me a ticket aboard and can only hope it will yield lasting results.

I held a few opinions I already shared sketchily with Dr. Keating. I’ll avail myself of the opportunity offered to share them on Taiwan 1st.

Keep up the good work and 台湾全速前進。頑張りましょう。

Jerome Besson
